Watsonville- Salinas:
Quality: Quality has been good. Firm berries with light color.
Volume: Volume continues to decline as the season will come to a close at the end of November.
Pack Counts: Conventional: 18-22; Organic: 28-32
Planting: Ranches are focused on spring crop planting with the goal to be 100% in the ground in the next few weeks for both conventional and organic fields.
Santa Maria:
Weather: The area experienced high winds and cold overnight temperatures in the 30's over the weekend. Frost has been prevalent, but as of Monday morning it is too early to assess any potential damage as a result.
Quality: Bulk is being dropped due to unacceptable quality of deformed and pin rot. Crews are working meticulously to pack best quality. Quality of packs overall is good with size improving. Wet weather in the forecast has growers expecting decay in the next week.
Volume: Volume is down industrywide and will slowly be decreasing.
Pack Counts: Conventional: 20-22 / 22-24; Organic: 22-24 / 26
Mexico:
Quality: Quality looks good and has improved a lot with better weather. Growers seeing decent size, less bruising, and good color.
Volume: A lot of bloom is popping up throughout the fields. This is a good sign as we approach peak volumes in December.
Florida:
Planting: Planting will be complete within the week.
Quality: A good amount of bloom is being reported by growers with some scattered red fruit starting to be seen throughout the fields.
Harvest: Volume is expected to ramp up quickly once harvest begins at the end of November.
Mexico:
Quality: Very good quality with good size, bloom, flavor and firmness.
Volume: The estimates out of Mexico for the next few weeks has decreased due to some cooler weather that slowed down ripening and crop development. Increase in production.
South America:
Quality: Quality on recent container arrivals from Peru, Argentina, and Uruguay has been mostly good with good size, bloom and firmness.
Volume: Light volume overall so far. Organic volume is increasing out of South America over the next 4 weeks. Chilean arrivals will begin to ramp up in mid-December.
Oxnard:
Harvest: The first pick of this organic production will begin early to mid-December.
Mexico:
Quality: Very good. Small amounts of broken fruit, uneven ripening and overripe fruit – of which crews are working hard to keep out of the packs.
Volume: A strong, steady volume anticipates for the next 3 or 4 months.
Mexico:
Quality: Overall good quality with minimal overripe and red cells.
Volume: Production is expected to increase week over week beginning in December.
