Happy Monday!

Fall is in the air! November has brought cool, crisp mornings that linger into sun-filled afternoons here in our California growing regions. While our berries love this chilly weather (and so do we!) fall is about the shedding of leaves to make way for new growth – and the same goes for our berries! While our strawberry season has began to slow down here in California, we are transitioning into the planting process for our next season of sweet, California strawberries, and we can’t wait for harvest in just a few short months. But not so fast.. our Mexico growing regions are in production with all berry commodities, Florida has strawberries on the way, and our South American regions have all the mighty blues for our shopper’s fall-festive needs. Be sure to maintain prominent floor space for berries during this busy holiday season.

Crop Updates
Watsonville - Salinas:

We experienced light showers last week as we headed into the weekend. However, we started off the week with clear skies and chilly temperatures, but do see rain in our immediate forecast in both Salinas and Watsonville Thursday of this week, and Monday of next. This California fall is underway, and cooler temperatures are sweeping our growing regions. Our strawberries love these cooler temps, and are firming up nicely. While quality is looking great, volume is slowly decreasing as we begin transitioning from picking to planting for our next season of fruit. Our raspberries and blackberries will continue for 3-4 more weeks due to being protected by hoops. We anticipate another 2 weeks until we have finished planting completely for our next season of strawberry crops.

Weather has certainly cooled down. We have seen overcast skies with highs in the 60s and lows in the 50s. We saw scattered showers toward the end of the week and into the weekend. This week we anticipate temperatures in the mid 60s – low 70s with no rain in the forecast. Fall is definitely in the air with these crisp, cool mornings- and our strawberry fall crop is looking great. Last week growers were focused on finishing up strawberry planting before the rains hit – with 10 acres of organics planted last Thursday. We will continue our planting process until mid-November. In the meantime, we have wrapped up our blackberry production for the season. Size among our conventional fruit is increasing at 24-26 count, and is firming up from these cooler temperatures. Our organic berries are 26-30 count – with a few crooked sections in our fields - all in which we are working to improve. Overall, quality is looking good in this growing region.

Mexico:

Weather in our various Mexico growing regions depends varying on location – Zamora and Irapuato have similar weather patterns – with sunny days in the mid-80s, and fresh nighttime lows in the 50s. We anticipate our highs to drop to the 70s this week, while our lows will remain steady. Our strawberry quality in Irapuato is looking great and we are currently packing 2lbs clamshells. Zamora strawberries should increase in size as we head further into the month of November. Maravatío experienced some isolated showers last week which caused growers to suspend harvest. This week, weather should remain in the 80s with nighttime lows in the 40s with no rain in the forecast this week. Both Los Reyes and Ziracuaretiro can expect highs in the 80s and lows in the 50s with sunny days and low chances of rain ahead. Our Mexico blueberries have started scratching, but volume still needs to increase to pack.

Blueberries:

We will be experiencing warmer temperatures this week in our Metán, Argentina growing region. We have hit our production peak in this region and harvest advance is fast. In Concordia, Argentina temperatures range from 70s - 80s with no rain in the forecast this week. Our Uruguayan fruit looks good, and will continue to harvest in sectors least affected by last weeks storm. Chile will start scratching the 1st of December, and we can expect to have a blue Christmas from this region with lots of volume on the way.

Florida:

Weather in this region has been in the low 80s with nighttime lows in the 60s. We foresee this weather pattern lasting for another 15+ days with no rain in the forecast. We are starting to see some green fruit around, and should see some pallets this first harvest. We are expecting an increase in fruit in the next pick with the Florida Beauty variety. We are going to have some of the earliest fruit – as we are about a week or two ahead of everyone else industry-wide in the planting-harvesting process. Labor has been plentiful, and we are looking good for this season in Florida.
