Crop Updates

Strawberries

Watsonville- Salinas:

Quality: A half inch of rain from last week caused damage to about 10-15% of the crop. Some of the issues are spongey tips and cracked berries with little decay, but crews are keeping packs clean by dropping the damaged fruit.

Volume: Watsonville will wrap up this week and all volume will be coming out of Salinas going forward.

Pack Counts: Conventional: 22-24

Santa Maria:

Quality: Conventional size is back up, with overall good quality and small amounts of pinpoint rot and deformed tips. Organic fruit is firm with a little pinpoint rot.

Volume: Newly planted crop is seeing some flowers already.

Pack Counts: Conventional: 20-22-24

Mexico:

Quality: Quality is good with a little bruised and overripe fruit.

Volume: Overcast days have increased green shoulders on the berries, and growers are dropping a lot of fruit, which has decreased the volume this week.

Florida:

Quality: Overall, quality is good with a few signs of pestalotia, but growers are working hard to keep it from spreading.

Volume: Crews are passing through and harvesting small volume this week, but the plants are pushing a lot of flowers so we expect the volume to pick up in the next couple weeks. Organic harvest will start next week.

Pack Count: Conventional: 28-30

Oxnard:

Harvest: The area experienced an unusual freeze event which took out our lead berry production. While we don’t expect to see total production numbers decline as a result, we will let the crop reset and not begin harvest until early January.

Raspberries

Mexico:

Quality: Seeing some broken fruit and uneven ripening due to temperature fluctuations throughout the day. Crews are watching this carefully and keeping high quality packs a priority.

Volume: Production volume will be steady for the next 4 weeks.

Blackberries

Mexico:

Quality: Good quality with some minor wind damage, red cell and leaky berries, but crews are working hard to maintain clean packs.

Volume: Will increase over the next 4 weeks.
