Happy Friday!
We hope you had a wicked Halloween and are recovering from all the sweets and treats. Despite the afternoon heat, it is beginning to really feel like fall here in our California growing regions with frosty, cool mornings and falling leaves. That said, this week our Watsonville-Salinas growers all began planting for the 2020 crop, with many still harvesting as well. Florida is kicking off their strawberry harvest at the end of next week, and our South American blueberry season is coming along well with great firmness, size and flavor. We're looking forward to a fall-filled November as berries make their way into the festivities and onto shoppers plates.

Watsonville-Salinas:
Santa Maria:
We started the week in the 60s-70s, with nights in the high 30s-low-40s and frost in the mornings. Next week looks dry with highs in the 70s and lows in the 40s overnight. Fruit quality looks really nice, though we are running into green shoulders here and there. Counts are 16-18 - we are seeing large fruit as well as large flowers and green fruit coming in. The Monterey is looking better this week, and our organics are in between production cycles this week at mostly 24-28 count, some 30. We are planting conventional crops and should finish up by this Saturday, with our organics to wrap up next week. The cold morning temperatures could affect volumes but overall things are looking good. We are expecting to see an increase in organic production in a few weeks.
Oxnard:
The Santa Ana winds started picking up on Wednesday of this week in this region with record winds at 45-50 mph. Conditions are better today and continuing to taper off. Mid-week field personnel were off due to air quality and safety concerns from the fires in Southern California. Over the next 10 days, we will be heading into a warming trend in the 70s-80s range and no rain in the forecast. We will begin picking the first new crop at the end of November -beginning of December.
Mexico:
Weather in general across all Central Mexico regions continues to forego scattered rains during the afternoon and evenings, with fog in the mornings. The temperatures all range between 54-80, with Maravatio slightly cooler at 51-76 degrees. Next week's weather should remain relatively similar at this point.
Blueberries:
Current crop quality is just right - with good bloom, size and firmness. The weather in some regions has not promoted ripening of fruit, but volume has not been compromised and numbers are projected to continue to increase each week.
The irregular rains throughout all regions has made packing fruit difficult lately. Our field personnel and quality assurance team is working diligently to mitigate these concerns and ensure clean packs and quality. Volumes are projected to increase each week despite weather concerns and overall the fruit that is being received is firm, full color and good size.
Strawberries:
Plants are looking great and new flowers are coming in nicely. Field conditions and quality look good - with strawberries 24-28 count, firm and nice color. Volumes are increasing each week.
South America:
Temperatures in Peru are still warm and mostly in the 70s, and harvest volumes are steady. We are seeing good size and firmness from our Biloxi variety. Harvest in Concordia-Salto has been interrupted due to thunderstorms and rains forecasted for this week. In Metan, we are seeing high temperatures and accelerated ripeness of crops. We have full harvest of the Emerald, Springhigh, Kestrel and Star varieties - all of which are showing good appearance in origin. In Chile, we are seeing mostly sunny days in Ovalle and Malloa, with some showers forecasted for today, as well as next Friday in Cauquenes and San Javier. Both regions of Malloa and Ovalle are exporting varieties such as Emerald, Ventura and star - all of which are showing great size, bloom and firmness.
Florida:
We are on track to begin harvest by end of next week. Stay tuned for photos of our first picks.
