Crop Updates

Strawberries

Oxnard: 

Quality: Fruit quality is good with a nice sheen, taste, and color.

Volume: Ranches are amid their peak season with production looking to start decreasing in the next two weeks. 

Pack Counts: Conventional: 18-20 ct.

Santa Maria:

Quality: Conventional fruit has great size, shape, and firmness with minor uneven ripening and deformed tips. Incoming warm weather should help even out ripening. Organic fruit looks very good. 

Volume: Yields are starting to trend upwards with peak season likely starting the second week in May and continuing through to June. 

Pack Counts: Conventional:  12-14, 16-20 ct. Depending on variety / Organic: 14-16-18 ct. Depending on variety

Con Straw-1

OG Straw-1

Watsonville/Salinas:

Quality: Quality is great with the only minor defects being burnt calyxes and windburn.

Volume: Production is slowly increasing each week as the season starts later than usual. Strong flower loads on the plants will bring bigger increases to harvest volume soon. 

Pack Counts: Conventional: 9-12 ct. / Organic: 12-15 ct.

Blueberries

Mexico

Quality: Fruit quality is good with some small, shriveled berries due to ongoing heat. The average berry size is 10-12 mm. 

Volume: Production was above the estimates for this week and last, but will continue to decrease over the next few weeks.

Blues-3-1

Oxnard

Quality: Overall quality of these organic blueberries is good with an occasional smaller berry. 

Volume: Still moving downward for the season.

Central Valley, CA

Quality: Quality is looking very good. 

Volume: Packing will begin in the next few weeks for many growers with peak production forecasted for the weeks of May 10 – June 7 on both organic and conventional fruit.

Florida:

Quality: Quality of the blueberries is very good with good size, firmness, flavor, and bloom. 

Volume: Peak week production is slowing down with the season wrapping up around mid-May.

 

Georgia:

Quality: Quality is excellent with good size, bloom, and flavor. 

Volume: Ranches are entering full peak towards the end of next week and expect large increases in production numbers leading up to it.

Raspberries

Mexico:

Quality: Pack quality is good and clean despite extremely high temperatures.  

Volume: Production will decrease through the month of May and pick back up at the beginning of June.

Rasps-1

Watsonville/Salinas:

Harvest Update: Ranches are expecting to start light harvests during the end of May and first week of June with production picking up throughout June.

Blackberries 

Mexico:

Quality: Some broken and red cells due to weather. 

Volume: Harvesting will continue for the next 3 weeks as volumes decrease. Severe heat is causing an earlier finish than previous seasons. 

Blacks-1

Watsonville/Salinas:

Harvest Update: Ranches are expecting to start light harvests during the end of May and first week of June with production picking up throughout June.
