The Buzz: Your source for farm fresh berry info

May 15, 2017

Happy Monday!

We are beginning to wind down our fresh season in Oxnard, but are still harvesting organic strawberries as long as quality remains strong. However, Salinas, Watsonville and Santa Maria continue to produce plenty of fresh, high quality berries with no signs of slowing down along the central coast!

Crop Updates

Watsonville - Salinas:

This week we are starting off with some colder weather and potential showers Tuesday, with a warming trend emerging mid-week with highs expected in the 80s and nighttime lows in the 50s. Strawberry volume in the Salinas-Watsonville regions are expected to increase week by week all the way into June. Quality looks good - with only some minor green or overripe fruit. Counts are 12-14, with Cabrillo slightly smaller.

Santa Maria:

Weather in this region has been consistently mild and will continue to be as we ease into this week. Temperatures should rise toward the end of the week, with potential highs in the 80s once we enter into the weekend. Volume is expected to increase, with subtle drops in the following weeks ahead. Size is also decreasing based on location, with 18-20 counts depending on ranch and location.

Mexico:

Weather in Los Reyes, Tangancicuaro and Ziracuaretiro will have highs in the 80s and nighttime lows in the 50-60s this week with hot days and clear, cool evenings. The only rain expected among these regions will be in Los Reyes - potentially next weekend. Quality in all three areas has been good with no major issues for now. The common defects we find most are overripe and occasional turning, but the fruit is kept in fresh areas and growers deliver constantly to our refrigerating van.

Blueberries:

Weather this week will begin mild in the central valley, with a warming trend emerging later into the week. Georgia weather is hot, with highs in the 90s and lows in the 60s. Volume is increasing weekly in both regions, with steady production for California and Georgia blues through June 15th.

Field Days with Cal Giant:

Last week our friends from Markon traveled all the way from Texas to tour our fields! They loved tasting our fresh-picked, special label strawberries straight from our Salinas field. We enjoy sharing our field operations with customers as often as we can, so if you are planning a trip to the coast, let us know.
