Crop Updates

Strawberries

Santa Maria:

Quality: Both conventional and organic strawberries have great shape, color, firmness, and sheen. Minor issues with dark color and berry-on-berry bruising; adjustments are being made to reduce the occurrence.

Volume: Production continues to increase and is expected to peak the last two weeks of May with strong promotional volume continuing through June. 

Pack Counts: Conventional: 16-18, 20-22 ct. / Organic: 14-16 ct.

Watsonville/Salinas:

Quality: Fruit quality is great for both organic and conventional strawberries. The only defects are minor berry-on-berry bruising due to large fruit.

Volume: As we’ve been reporting, industry-wide volume is moving slower than traditional years. California Giant production is not expected to peak until the middle of June and will remain strong and steady until September. 

Pack Counts: Conventional:  9-12 ct. / Organic: 12-14 ct.

Blueberries

Mexico

Quality: Quality remains good with some small fruit and minor heat damage from continued hot weather. 

Volume: Volume continues to exceed estimates but is still on a downward trajectory for the season.

Oxnard

Quality: This organic blueberry crop continues to produce very good quality fruit that is firm and has strong bloom. 

Volume: Volume harvested is anticipated to slowly decline beginning this week. The first week of June is projected as the final week of the season.

Central Valley, CA

Quality: Quality is good. 

Volume: Production is currently light and is expected to peak from mid-May through the beginning of June.

Georgia:

Quality: Quality is good. 

Volume: Peak production is in full swing and is expected to remain the case through the close of the season in mid-June.

Raspberries

Mexico:

Quality: Quality is good with some minor thrip damage that growers are working hard to mitigate. 

Volume: Production is on a downward trend and will pick back up in June.

Harvest Status: Ranches will begin harvesting very light volumes at the end of the month and expect production to gain momentum in June.

Blackberries 

Watsonville/Salinas:

Harvest Status: Ranches will begin harvesting very light volumes at the end of the month and expect production to gain momentum in June. 

Georgia:

Harvest Status: Ranches will begin harvesting very light volumes at the end of the month and expect to reach peak production early-mid June.
