Happy Monday!

It's a new week filled with new updates! In hopes to optimize reader efficiency, we have created a new Trade Buzz Email design that should not only make sifting through weekly updates more convenient, but it will also allow us to track page views with our “read more” buttons that link back to our Trade Buzz Blog! In doing this, we will have a better understanding of what our readers want to see more of each week, and how we can best deliver that.

Updates straight from the farm! Meet our Watsonville bushberry grower: John Navarro

Crop Updates

Watsonville - Salinas:

Weather in Watsonville and Salinas has consisted of overcast, cloudy mornings and sunny afternoons. Last week we saw light showers toward the end of the week and into the weekend, but can expect a warming trend beginning mid- week with temperatures fluctuating in the mid to high 70s. Overall, fruit quality looks good, and volume should keep inching up over the next 2-3 weeks until it begins to flatten out as we head into July. Fruit size is dropping at a slow pace, with Watsonville fruit holding better in size than Salinas. Most strawberries are 12-14 count, with Salinas fruit at 16-18 count. Our Watsonville raspberries are looking good and are steady in volume. Our Adelita variety has not kicked in yet, but volume should spike soon once it does. Blackberries are loading up, and wlll continue to increase weekly in volume as well.

Santa Maria:

We can expect to see a warming trend emerge toward the middle of the week, with temperatures ranging in the high 70s – low 80s – and evenings staying in the 60s overnight. Strawberry quality is much better, with primarily 3-day fruit cycles. San Andreas are 18-22 count, with Monterey at 20-24 count. Both firm with great color. Organic San Andreas have great quality and are also at 20-24 count. Blackberry quality looks good, and volume should increase significantly as we get deeper into July. If mild temperatures continue during these summer months, volume overall among our fruit should remain steady and consistent.

Blackberries:

This year’s Georgia crop looks fantastic. We will have good volume in the following weeks of June as we make our way into July, with Osage and Ouachita being our main varieties. Watsonville blackberries are on the increase in volume, and should continue to improve as weather warms up later this week.

Blueberries:

Thunderstorms have been of abundance in our Georgia growing region. Despite weather conditions, quality has remained steady and volume should remain consistent through this week as the season winds down. Weather has been hot in the central valley, and temperatures this week should fluctuate between the low to mid 90s, with quality remaining decent as well, though volume is starting to slow down. We are only weeks away from our pacific north west harvest, and look forward to our July crop!
