South America:

Blueberry production out of Uruguay and Argentina production will begin in September. Arrivals are expected from Chile to begin mid-October, which is earlier than in years past.

British Columbia:

Unfortunately, due to poor quality for fresh pack and lack of adequate labor, the season has closed for California Giant’s BC blueberries.

Strawberries
Watsonville- Salinas:

The June gloom has continued through July with overcast and foggy mornings with sunny 70-degree afternoons. We’re seeing good quality, nice color and firm fruit. The strawberries are holding size. Conventional Counts: 17-20 (Watsonville); 23-26 (Salinas). Organic Counts: 24-28.

Santa Maria:

Quality continues to be a focus for Santa Maria strawberries. We’ve been seeing gradual improvements; however, we are watching bruising from the afternoon heat. Growers report that size coming back as well. Conventional Counts: 20-24; Organic Counts: 20-30.

Raspberries
Watsonville-Salinas:

Volumes will be tight for the next few weeks, but we anticipate an increase in supply early September.

Mexico:

The rainy season continues for Mexico with rain passing through every day. Temperatures are in the mid-90’s with high humidity. Growers are working hard to ensure good quality, despite the weather challenges. Volume will remain steady for the next few weeks and then anticipate an increase in supply by late August.

Blackberries
Watsonville-Salinas:

Prime Ark variety continues to maintain good quality. We expect volume to increase week by week, and hit peak from this area in September.

Santa Maria:

No changes from last week. Quality is good, with a few red cells here and there. Fruit is firm, and flavor is good.

Consumer Spotlight

A berry sweet message from a consumer who received our berries from their local church:

"Today was the first time in my life of 78 years that I ever ate fresh blueberries. I was given a box of food from church as a loving gift during this quarantine time as I am a very high risk person. I wanted to thank you for your wonderful sweet blueberries. As an insulin dependent diabetic, they were a joy to eat. Please take the time in the future to advertise how they are something all folks can eat without feeling guilty, especially  for diabetics and young folks. Thank you for your generous donation."
