Happy Friday!

It's almost game day and shoppers are gearing up for the fun. The Super Bowl is this Sunday and party planners and watch party hosts are getting their sporty spreads ready to go. We're encouraging consumers to opt for colorful, healthy alternatives to popular game day finger foods, and hoping our team brings home the 'win'! Be sure to keep berries front and center for those last minute weekend trips to the store.

Good luck sports fans!

Crop Updates
Santa Maria:

Weather in Santa Maria heading into the weekend will warm up into the mid 70s with sunshine, and drop back down again next week into the 50s-60s, with nighttime lows in the 30s-40s. Quality is looking excellent in the fields, however the organic crop is slightly smaller at 20-22, but with great shape, sheen and color. The Conventional Fall Crop looks really nice at 14-16 count, with very large fruit, and some green shoulders here and there but nothing significant. Our San Andreas pick started this week with good color, nice shape and large fruit in the fields at 10-14 count. We are currently not having any labor issues at this time. Cal Giant Cooling is set to open next Monday for the season.

Oxnard:

We are also heading into a warming trend this weekend in our Oxnard region with temperatures reaching the mid-70s and cooling down significantly next week into the 50s-60s with nighttime temperatures in the 30s-40s, and no rain forecasted for the next 10-14 days. These conditions will ripen and firm up fruit all next week. Quality is very good with nice shape, color and sheen. Color is 95-100% and Fronteras is 14-16 count, with San Andreas at 16-18. Labor is not an issue at this time and stems are shaping up nicely for the Valentine's Day holiday.

Mexico:

In general, all Mexico growing regions are experiencing the same weather conditions at this time.

We are expecting showers after the weekend, accompanied by lower temperatures during the day and night. After the showers, we hope to continue with mostly cloudy conditions, and increased temperatures during. Generally speaking, all regions have been in the 40s-50s at night, with temperatures in the 70s-80s during the day.

Blueberry

Blueberry production will continue to increase. The next three weeks will have a slight increase in volume, and in the fourth week, we will have a big jump. Quality is looking good.

Blueberry Organic

Production will increase rapidly. The cold weather is slowing the ripening of fruit, but once this clears volumes will spike. The quality is good.

Raspberry

Raspberry volume is slightly down this week and next due to the frost we had earlier in January. Some fields that were pruned early will start harvest in about 4-5 weeks, week 17-18 we should have another peak of production increasing up to 55,000 crates per week.

Raspberry Organic

Raspberry production will increase in the coming weeks. Our grower is currently starting his peak production, and quality is looking good. The weather, however, is not helping to pick the fruit quickly. The cold temperatures during the night are too low and reduce the ripening process; during the day, hot temperatures increased causing irregular maturation of fruit.

Strawberry

The production in Zamora will reach its peak next week, and Maravatio volume is on a downward trend, mostly due to quality decrease derived of the weather patterns we've experienced. Volume will depend on the weather and the quality of the fruit. The fluctuation of temperatures, and cloudy weather do not help plants to reach full ripening. However, we are working with the growers to maintain good quality.

Blackberry

The volume will be steady for the next few weeks, quality is good -  we are seeing just a few red cell here there, but overall fruit is maintaining good quality.

Blueberries:

Mexico

Quality out of Mexico continues to be good.

South America

Arriving volumes from now through the end of the season will fall short of our previous forecasted volumes. The southern growing regions of Chile have been receiving rain recently and the remaining crop is looking lighter than expected.

We received our first container of organic 6oz from Chile in Oxnard last week. Our team reported that the quality looked very good upon arrival.

Oxnard Organics

Quality is very good among Oxnard organics and production is increasing. It looks like the peak in Oxnard will come in mid-February through early March this year.

Central Valley Organics

This week we confirmed that we will receive organic fruit out of the Central Valley. This organic fruit will help bridge the organic gap between the Oxnard organic fruit and organic fruit out of Oregon this summer.

Florida:

Weather has been steady in Florida with temperatures primarily in the high 60s and overcast. Tomorrow it should warm up a bit into the high 70s, then back down into the 60s the first half of the week. The second half of the week will be warm in the 80s with very small chances for showers at this point. Quality is looking very good, and the cool weather recently has firmed up the fruit. Color is 90-100% among all varieties, with Brilliance 18-20 count, Organic Brilliance 20 count and Organic Sensation 18 count. The warm weather at the tail end of next week will give a big push behind volumes heading into Valentine's Day.
