Crop Updates

Strawberries

Oxnard:

Quality: Strawberries are in good quality with good shape, sheen and taste. Coloring is at 90-100%. There are occasional wind scars still visible, but they are lessening with each of our harvests.

Volume: Production will steadily increase over the next several weeks. The anticipation of warmer night temperatures will help improve volume.

Pack Counts: Conventional: 16-18 ct.

Santa Maria:

Quality: Crews are still working on clean up from all the rain last week. Flowers look clean and there are several producing green fruit. Minor wind scars and water damage have caused some decay. Bruising and mildew is still being seen, but crews are working with great discipline to ensure good quality packs.

Volume: Production is expected to increase quickly by the end of February.

Pack Counts: Conventional: 16-18 ct / Organic: 18-20 ct depending on ranch.

South America:

Weather: Unprecedented thunderstorms for this time of year hit our Chilean blueberry fields last week with very heavy rains. This has led to a very light harvest in Chile this week.

Quality: Quality on recent container arrivals has been mostly good with some occasional fair quality grades mostly due to delays with vessels, ports, customs, etc. Most of the fruit on the west coast has been holding up well considering the delays the fruit has undergone.

Volume: Growers are currently assessing the damage, clearing fields and mitigating the impact of upcoming fruit. We'll see what is left in the field for late season harvests. Our late season estimates will decrease significantly as a result. We do expect noteworthy volume arriving through week 8 with the fruit that is already on the water. A drop in incoming volume will occur around week 9 based on the current estimates.

Weather: The freeze event that occurred at the end of January has affected our early season volume and estimates.

Quality: Good quality with firm berries and good bloom.

Volume: Production is expected to continue to be light until early March when we begin harvesting mid-season varieties that were not as badly affected by the freeze event.
