Happy Wednesday!

It's officially the last day of February, and we're springing into March! And while it may not feel like spring is on the horizon with these cooler California temperatures - we’re soon headed toward berries of abundance, and preparing for fresh, new beginnings with our Salinas-Watsonville season to commence in the coming weeks, and even our Georgia blues to kick off toward the end of the month and into April. That said, we do have a rain front coming in this week in much of our growing regions, so be sure to check in with us next Monday about our harvest schedule. We look forward to the budding, blossoming, new beginnings ahead, and a March month filled with all the berry inspiration needed for springtime.

Crop Updates

Watsonville - Salinas:

This region received some moisture last week with a few light showers. Weather hasn't been as cold in terms of freezing temperatures, but still very cold mornings and chilly afternoons. The next week or so will have a lot of scattered showers underway in both Watsonville and Salinas. Counts among our Monterey variety is 20-24 - with some Cabrillo on the way. Originally, we anticipated all growers to begin scratching the 2nd week of March, but see that being moved back about 10 days due to frost damage and cold weather slightly pushing back crop progression.

Santa Maria

Last week we experienced some freezing temperatures and our crops did suffer a bit, but are on the rebound. This week, temperatures will range in the high 50s - low 60s, with nighttime lows in the 30s - 40s. Rain is anticipated for tomorrow, Friday and again next Thursday - so showers are underway. Counts are high teens, low 20s, and organic fields hardly got hit with damage with our organic fall crop continue to harvest.

Oxnard:

Cold temperatures got down to 31 degrees last week, with some flowers that did recieve some damage - but very minimal. Weather this week should be similar to Santa Maria - with temperatures in the 50s - 60s range. Rain is on the radar for Thursday and Friday, but none is forecasted for the following week so far.

San Andreas size is looking better - with sizing to hold this week. Counts are 14-16 among both San Andreas and Fronteras.

Mexico:

Zamora is heading into a hot season with 80 degrees in the highs and mid 50 for the lows moving forward. Days are mostly sunny and hot. No rain is forecasted for this week. Temperatures are causing overripe berries, and are allowing to harvest only until around 3pm. Overall quality is still good. Maravatío has storms on the way this week - with rain, thunder, and lightning projected for the weekend into next week, which could play a part in harvest. Counts are 24-26 with an occasional 26-28 with Albion.

Los Reyes & Ziracuaretiro have highs around the 80s and lows in the mid-50s - despite warmer temperatures, rain is scheduled for Saturday - Tuesday in Ziracuaretiro with storms ahead. Quality is good with minimal issues. Raspberry and blueberry quality is good with no current challenges.

Florida:

Weather is going to be warm in the mid-high 80s, and mid to low 60s at night through Friday. We have a cool-front coming from there for a while, and should be back to seasonal temperatures from there in the 60-70s range. As far as quality - other than some bruising we have been keeping up for the most part on rounds, and maintaining 90-95 color. With 85-87 degree weather - bruising is inevitable, so we have been facing that setback. We should be able to cut down some bruising into that first week of March once weather gets back to seasonal temperatures. Counts are good, with Sensation - 12-15, Radiance - 16-20, Florida Beauty - mid 20s.

Blueberries:

Oxnard fruit is on the mend from last week's freezing temperatures. We’re rocking and rolling in Georgia with a lot of fruit on the way. Georgia blueberry fields are loaded with buds and blossoms - with a lot of fruit expected for early April. Here are some photos from one of our Georgia fields below:

Cooling, Storing, Prepping
Markon's Virtual Cooler demonstrates how to store fruits and vegetables at the proper temperature to ensure optimal quality and freshness. When our berries are being cooled and stored, it's best to have them toward the back of the cooler in the section marked green. Not only is it crucial for chefs to understand proper produce placement in their cooler space, but handling tips as well to ensure the best quality, flavor and appearance when serving up berry-filled dishes.
