February 1, 2016

As you know, the fresh berry market in California continues to be volatile due to extreme weather patterns (El Niño) and shipping delays. The drought in previous years has provided early season fruit that is not typical of a normal winter rain pattern. The El Niño weather pattern has been forecasted as a long term situation that is expected to affect California berry harvesting cycles and ultimately availability for the first quarter of 2016.

We are making every effort to keep our fields clean and plants healthy throughout this disruptive time period to prepare for a long 2016 harvest season once the weather shifts into a more normal pattern.  We are also focused on keeping you informed in a timely manner with the latest information possible, so this newsletter will continue to provide you with our most recent forecasts and updates on fruit quality and availability.

Mexico - The weather has been mostly cloudy, with daytime highs in the low 80’s and nighttime lows in the mid 40’s.

Quality is good, with only occasional green shoulders. The cooler weather is helping with quality.

Our blackberry growing region suffered a freeze. Our harvesters are maintaining quality, but volume is slightly down.

Florida - The storm last week brought 2 to 2 ½ inches of rain  Temperatures warmed up last weekend to the high 70’s - low 80’s. There is a 90% chance of rain on Wednesday that’s bringing cooler temperatures. Daytime highs will cool down to the 60’s and nighttime lows will be in the 40’s.  Ideal weather is forecasted for the 6th through the 13th.

Counts are 18-24.

Oxnard -  Daytime temps warmed up to the mid 70’s last week, with nights in the 40’s.  This week, daytime temps are cooling down to the low 60’s, with nighttime lows in the low 40’s.  We received around 1” of rain on Sunday and experienced 40 MPH wind gusts. We are expecting fruit to have some wind damage.

Counts are 12-16. Labor is plentiful.

Santa Maria - The weather last week was in the mid to upper 60’s and nighttime lows were in the 40’s.  Temps are expected to be the same this week, with a slight warming trend by the end of the week. We received around 1” of rain over the weekend.

One of our growers harvested two pallets this week.  The quality is good, with only the occasional green shoulder. Counts are 14-18.  We should begin harvesting organic strawberries around mid-March.

Watsonville - The rain hasn’t hurt any plants.  This area is forecasted to get 10-15 days of nice weather after last weekend’s storm.  Harvest is still on schedule for mid-March.

Blueberries -  Peaking Chilean volumes are arriving to our distribution centers on both coasts right now. Our southern Chilean crop is producing large, crisp, and sweet berries. The warm days and cooler nights in this region are creating the perfect environment for great quality berries. Our Chilean program will have a steady supply of blueberries through February, possibly extending through the second week of March. Our North American blueberry program has begun. We will have substantial conventional and organic volume available starting the first week of March.
