Happy Tuesday!

It’s officially August! We are still in the midst of summer, and still feeling this warm, summertime weather! Temperatures are fluctuating into the 70s-80s in much of our California growing regions, with our British Columbia blues feeling the heat this week in Canada. With the beginning of this new month also means back to school for many. With a fresh start right around the corner, so is our Fresh Start campaign! Be on the lookout in the coming weeks for our Fresh Start promotions, where this year for the first time ever, we are targeting moms, students, and our friends away at college!

Crop Updates
Watsonville - Salinas:

Weather in this region has stayed consistent and beautiful. Temperatures range from the low to mid 70s, with our coastal breeze keeping temperatures just right for our berries in California. Berry quality and flavor is consistently good among all varieties, with counts 18-20 in most ranches. Our raspberries are on the rise in volume, with blackberries expected to increase after this week. Overall, labor is decent – with rounds being made on time.

Santa Maria

Weather has been mild and temperate in this region, with a slight peak in heat beginning at the start of this week. We can see temperatures in the mid to high 80s, as we head back into the 70s toward the end of the week. All strawberries are still in the freezer – with our conventional fruit wrapping up. Our organic strawberries will make their way back into fresh over the next few weeks, with our fall crop soon coming into play. We predict the last week of August we'll start scratching, picking up volume in September and then peaking in October. Our organic and conventional blackberries are looking big and excellent, with a big push in volume headed our way for the month of August.

Blueberries:

Our British Columbia blueberries peaked the last week of July as we headed into the new month. Fruit quality looks good and crops look beautiful. Fruit quality will be watched extra close this week due to the extreme heat conditions that British Columbia is facing – depending on how it holds, we may send our mid-season varieties to freezers.

News

And that's a wrap! Last Thursday we gathered at the Monterey Wharf Marketplace to celebrate our 50 dedicated Tour de Fresh riders. After 3 long days of cycling through tough terrain starting from Pismo, winding down to Cambria, and all the way to the Monterey coast, we were able to ring in a whopping $165,096 at the finish line. In just a few days since we have already surpassed this total to a current fundraising amount of $168,491. It's not too late! We are accepting donations all the way through August, so click here to join the cause everyone is talking about and bring salad bars to schools near you!

Reaching Consumers

Meet our growers the Rocha Bros and our California Giant owner and CEO Bill Moncovich as they walk the luscious berry fields that belong to the Rochas here in Watsonville, California. It is important to us to show our consumers exactly where their berries came from, which is why we have our 16-digit traceback code on the bottom of our Cal Giant clamshells. With this, consumers can type in their trace code and Follow Us to Our Farm with the chance to win a $100 Visa gift card, or a grand prize of $250!

Pick of the Week

If you're headed to the mountains for vacation, don't forget to hit this Raley's in Lake Tahoe for some tasty organic Cal Giant strawberries!

Send us your own "pick of the week" and we will feature it here!

Stay tuned for updates every two weeks for the remainder of the year.
