Crop Updates

Strawberries

Oxnard: 

Quality:  Fruit quality is very good with a healthy sheen, color, taste, and shape.

Volume: Ranches are in peak production with volume increasing over the next few weeks.

Santa Maria:

Quality: Overall fruit quality is good with some small cold weather-caused defects like deformed tips and green shoulders. 

Volume: April volume is coming off slow, but a big upswing in production is slated to start the first or second week of May and will continue into June.

Pack Counts: Conventional: 14-16; 18-20 ct depending on variety

Organic: Spring Crop: 12-14 ct 

Organic Fall Crop: 22-25 ct

Watsonville/Salinas:

Quality: Both organic and conventional fruit look very good and clean with a nice size and only a few, minor burnt calyxes. 

Volume: The season is off to a slow start due to cold weather impeding plant growth. Growers anticipate production should increase in mid-May. 

Pack Counts: 10-12, 14-16 ct

Blueberries

Mexico

Over 100-degree weather has been affecting growing regions in Mexico. Growers are working to protect plants and fruit by applying plenty of water and venting tunnels. 

Quality: Fruit quality is good with some small or shriveled berries due to the extreme heat. Average berry size is 10-12mm.

Volume: Overall production is beginning to slowly decrease.

Oxnard

Quality: Organic quality is good with mostly firm berries and good bloom; occasional minor bruising. 

Volume: Overall production is beginning to slowly decrease.

Central Valley, CA

Quality: Very good.

Volume: Light harvesting has begun at some ranches with most growers projecting to ramp up production the first or second week of May. Peak production will be mid-May through early-June.

Florida:

Quality: Fruit quality is very good with good size, bloom, firmness and flavor.

Volume: Florida is currently in peak production with actual volumes running slightly below projected due to inclement weather last week. Volumes are expected to taper off after the beginning of May.

Georgia:

Quality: Berry quality is very good.

Volume: Growers started harvesting last week with numbers above estimates. Peak season will start early May and wrap up during the middle of the month. Inclement weather last week caused some green fruit drop, which has slightly reduced overall season estimates from the area.

Raspberries

Mexico:

Quality: Good quality clean packs with consistent color, size, and ripeness. 

Volume: Pruning has reduced harvest volumes for the next month. Production is anticipated to increase by late-June and continue through July. 

Watsonville/Salinas:

Harvest Status: A light harvest of fruit is expected to start at the end of May.

Blackberries 

Mexico:

Quality: Fruit quality remains good with a smaller size due to hot, dry weather. 

Volume: Production is expected to increase through May.
