STRAWBERRIES

Oxnard

Quality: Quality is good with nice shape and sheen. Fruit can be a little dusty from Santa Ana winds, but no damage. 

Volume: Production is increasing each week.    

Pack Counts: Conventional: 14-18

Santa Maria

Quality: Conventional quality is good with occasional green shoulders and frost damage. Organic fruit quality is good with some bruising and deformed tips. Crews are doing a great job keeping a clean pack.  

Volume: Volume will continue to increase through March.  

Pack Counts: Conventional Spring Crop: 14-18, 16-20 depending on ranch; Organic Spring Crop: 14-18; Organic Fall Crop: 25-30

Watsonville/Salinas

Harvest Status: Growers are reporting frost damage that will be cleaned up over the next week. Volumes will increase through March.

Quality: Quality is great. Hot weather with warm nights may speed up ripening.  

Volume: Production is steady.  

Pack Counts: Conventional: 16-20-22; Organic: 22-25

Quality: Quality is fair.  

Volume: Production will decrease this week due to warm temperatures.

BLUEBERRIES

Mexico

Quality: Quality is great with increased ripening and smaller sizes due to warm, sunny weather.  

Volume: Production is increasing.

Quality: Arrival quality is mixed due to port delays with both good and fair fruit. 

Volume: Arrivals will continue through week 12.  

Oxnard

Quality: Quality is good with some freeze damage from below freezing temperatures last week.  

Volume: Estimates have decreased through the end of the season due to freeze damage.

Quality: Quality is good with occasional broken fruit and uneven ripening due to fluctuating temperatures.  

Volume: Production will be steady for the next 4 weeks.

Quality: Quality is good overall with some red cell and leaky fruit. Crews are doing a great job keeping a clean pack. 

Volume: Production is declining due to warm temperatures.

Get ready for St. Patrick's Day with this berry green cocktail! 
 
Ingredients:
  • 1/4 cup California Giant blueberries
  • 2 kiwis, peeled
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 lime
  • 1 sprig of mint
  • 2 ounces of rum
  • Club soda
  • Crushed ice

Directions:

  • In a food processor, combine kiwis, honey and juice from half of the lime. Combine and set aside.
  • In the bottom of your glass, muddle half of the blueberries with three mint leaves. Pour kiwi mixture on top. Add crushed ice, rum and club soda to your liking. Top with remaining blueberries, mint and a wedge of lime.
