Blueberries
Oregon:

We’ve got the blues! While growers anticipate the production curve to begin slowly trending down, the volumes being harvested and packed continue and in noteworthy amounts – with no indication of it slowing down soon. Overall, quality looks good. The last of the Duke has been picked, and the mid-season varieties: Draper, Blue Ribbon, Legacy and Megasblue are starting to come in and looking nice. Great size and good bloom.

British Columbia:

While harvest began this last week, growers are expecting an overall reduction of 30-40% compared to last year’s volume. This is due to intermittent weather patterns, labor shortages, and fair to poor quality to start the season.

Strawberries
Watsonville- Salinas:

Conventional and organic quality is good due to mild weather the past week. Fruit is firm with only occasional dark fruit. We anticipate volumes to slowly increase in the coming weeks. Labor is still tight but ranches are able to keep up due to the cooler weather and lower volumes.  Some ranches are starting to work the ground in preparation for next year. Conventional Counts: 18-22. Organic Counts: 26-28 (30).

Santa Maria:

Growers are seeing major improvements in fruit quality.  Much less bruising and the bronzing is gone; the packs are clean and look great. Fall crop new plantings look good and have been de-blossomed. All of these plants are looking healthy and vigorous - a good sign of the upcoming crop that is expected to start mid-August. Organic fruit quality continues to improve with cooler temperatures.  Some full red fruit that is firm, with much less bruising than we’ve been seeing. Conventional Counts: 18-22. Organic Counts: 24-26.

Blackberries

Harvest of the Ouachita variety is ending, and Prime Ark is starting with good quality and only occasional red cell.

Santa Maria:

Blackberries are looking good. There’s a nice flower set and a good amount of green fruit in the field. Quality is strong, with a couple red celled berries around but nothing excessive. Fruit is firm, and flavor is good.
